A running toilet can waste a lot of water which can cost a pretty penny. A toilet that keeps running can be caused by several different issues. The most common causes are a faulty flapper valve, a defective fill valve, or an improperly adjusted float.
The flapper valve is responsible for sealing the bottom of the tank and preventing water from flowing into the bowl. If the flapper valve is damaged or worn out, it may not seal properly, causing water to continuously leak into the bowl, which leads to the toilet running.
The fill valve, also known as the ballcock valve, is responsible for refilling the tank with water after each flush. If the fill valve is defective, it may not be able to shut off the water supply once the tank is full, causing the toilet to keep running.
Lastly, the float is responsible for controlling the water level in the tank. If the float is improperly adjusted or damaged, it may not be able to regulate the water level in the tank, leading to an overflow that causes the toilet to keep running.
In order to fix a running toilet, you may need to replace or adjust the flapper valve, fill valve, or float. If you are not comfortable making these adjustments yourself, it’s best to contact a plumber to assist you.
